Our Story

The Mighty Robo-Rangers originated in Alton, TX out of Alton Memorial Jr. High School as part of the Mission Consolidated Independent School District in Mission, TX. The team was created by two brothers, Robert Granados and Sammy Rivera, that both teach Math and Science at Alton Memorial Jr. High. The team started as an extra-curricular program for the Mission CISD Migrant Program. The Mission CISD Migrant Department’s initiative was to offer a program that their migrant students could have a STEM experiences. The first ever competition that the team participated was at the 2013 Hispanic Engineering, Science, and Technology (HESTEC) Robotics Day event were both Mission CISD Migrant Middle School teams made it to the Final Four as rookies. This opened opportunities for another program to offer Robotics at Mission CISD. The GT Robotics program spawned from the Advanced Academic Department offering this as a service to their student as an after-school program.

The following year in 2014, the Mighty Robo-Rangers joined the Texas Computer Education Association (TCEA) Robotics Competition and participated in their Area 1 qualifier placing 4th in the Intermediate Division and later advancing to the TCEA State Championship as a wild-card invitation. The Robo-Rangers finished in 4th Place at the TCEA State Championship in their first ever trip to the state contest. This jumped started the team to participate in more STEM driven programs and contest. The Robo-Rangers were invited to participate at their first-ever Regional Science Bowl Competition held at the University of Texas-Pan American in 2014. They once again participated as rookies and swept everyone by storm as the 2014 Regional Science Bowl Champions. This qualified the team as one of four teams in the State of Texas and one of 48 teams to earn a berth to the National Science Bowl Competition held at Washington, D.C. The team went on to finish 10th at the National Science Bowl in the Lithium Ion Battery Contest.

In 2015, the momentum of success steamed rolled through many more contest by having the Mighty ROBO-RANGERS dominate an entire TCEA Area 1 Robotics Competition. Out of 12 total awards available, the Mighty ROBO-RANGERS went home with 8 more accolades by sweeping the entire 6 Intermediate awards in the Arena and Inventions categories. The other two awards were from the Advanced Arena categories. The team eventually qualified a total of 9 teams to the 2015 TCEA Robotics State Championship. They once again retained their 4th place state ranking by finish 4th in the Intermediate Arena Contest. The team qualified for the second time in back-to-back years to the National Science Bowl Competition in Washington, D.C. The 2015 Alton Memorial Robo-Rangers defended and retain their Regional Science Bowl Championship. They went on to finish with a Top 25 Academic National Team Ranking.

At the beginning of the 2015-2016 robotics season, the Mighty Robo-Rangers attended the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley Hispanic Engineering Science Technology (HESTEC) Robotics Day Competition and won 3 trophies at the local contest. 1st Place in the LEGO EV3 Grand Prix, 1st Place in the LEGO EV3 Pull Challenge, and 3rd Place LEGO Quadrathon. The year before the team had also placed 3rd Overall at HESTEC.

In 2015, the team went back to defend and retain its TCEA Area 1 Robotics Championship. The team won 8 out of 12 trophies once again at the Area Contest. This qualified mutliple teams to the TCEA State Robotics Championship. At the state contest, two Robo-Ranger teams brought home state trophies. The Silver Robo-Ranger team brought a 2nd Place title at the Advanced (High School) Arena Competition with a Jr. High team. The Aqua Robo-Ranger team brought home a 3rd Place title at the Intermediate Inventions Competition.

In 2016, the Mighty Robo-Rangers team maded the decision to join the FIRST Robotics Competition and the creation of FRC 5960 - "The Mighty Robo-Rangers" was formed. FRC 5960 competed at its first-ever Regional Competition in San Antonio, TX on March 9th - March 12th. It was an experience of a life time to compete at this level of robotics.
